Last night I had the great fortune to be part of a delightful food sampling affair at Chennai's leading Greek restaurant Kryptos, owned by Vipin Sachdev and his family. As an American who has enjoyed many different cuisines in about 20 countries around the world as well as the wide array of international foods found in restaurants throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, it was truly special to find such superb Greek food here in India.
My first comment is how lovely the restaurant itself is. Special stonework and woodwork from the craftsmen at Aurovilleadorns the walls and recessed, offset lighting created a very nice atmosphere, reflecting the architectural creativity of the Sachdev family. Regarding the food itself, the variety of dishes, ranging from mezze starters through baklava and pannacotta desserts, did, in very certain terms, not disappoint ! The cream of asparagus soup ( a favorite of mine), was excellent. I had seconds !The chicken in lemon sauce, kebab-paneerand, another favorite of mine, spinach and feta pie, were perfect.
I was very impressed with the sense of temperatures of the items served. Those items which should be hot, were hot, those best served warm were warm, and thepannacotta, as an example, ideally served cool but not cold, was precisely that. The temperature which different foods are eaten at is key to unlocking the optimum tastes, and Kryptos got it right !
Overall presentation was excellent, the sequence of what was served was ideal, the servers were sharp and attentive, and Vipin and Ishika Sachdev were lovely hosts, circulating amongst the group and making everyone feel at home.

Greece is a destination that is on my "I dream to visit" list. I dont know if I ever will, but I do dream of it often enough. And so being here, at the 1st Greek restaurant to hit Chennai, Kryptos is always a memorable one.. The restaurant has been serving up a range of good food for years now. They have a salad bar that puts all others to shame and the salad bar is completely veg, ranging from different kinds of olives, it has just about everything you can think of and some more. I have been to this restaurant quite a few times and enjoyed meals with friends and family. [Read earlier reviews here]
Today, we were looking forward to something different. We were not going to go towards the Salad bar, but were instead going to try a few dishes from the select menu. For us vegetarians, the meal began with a nice big bowl of Soup of Asparagus which was yumm.. Loved the texture and the flavours.
